I remember as a kid going with my mother grocery shopping on the weekend. We’d stop at the butcher, go to the grocery store then on the loop back home we’d stop at the local “convenience” store to get me a candy bar or two! None of these stores were chains. This was way before chains like 7-11 and White Hen Pantry. There might have been an A&P around, but it wasn’t within walking distance and my family didn’t own a car. So walking to the stores it was and fill up the wire basket on wheels that my mom dragged around!

Lawhon’s Grocery kind of reminds of those days! A step back in time. I was looking around at the meats and the owner came out from behind the counter and asked if I needed any help. There were customers at the prepared foods counter joking with the workers behind the counter. Everybody was laughing. Smiles all around. I even bet they knew each other’s names just like the store owners back in the day knew my mom. A sense of nostalgia swept over me.

We were just driving by and decided on the spur of the moment to stop, go in and check it out. We’ve been here for over two years and have heard good things about this place, but I guess we were thinking “its in a Marathon Gas Station, how good can it be?”! Our fridge and freezers at home were fully stocked and we had a bunch of leftovers to eat, so we didn’t want to get carried away like I usually do at Costco. So we settled on the prepared foods counter and bought some fried chicken and onion rings and grabbed a small container of potato salad.

So we get in the car and head back home, but there was a backup on Bayshore right before 31, so I asked for a onion ring while we’re sitting there. We ended up eating all the onion rings in a few minutes, they were so good! Can’t stop eat’n em! So we get back home and its time for the fried chicken and potato salad. The fried chicken was still nice and crispy, hot and done perfectly. The potato salad was a little too mayonasy for my wife, so I finished it!

So this is billed as a butcher shop. I hear that for some people this is the place to go for their meats. I will have to go back and get some steaks, ribs or pork chops and once I do I will let you know how that goes. Here’s a link to their website for more details and pics.
