Restaurant Review – DaRuMa Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

What a fun place! My wife and I went with two other couples and sat around a big hibachi hot plate table with 4 other people. A table of ten! Even though we didn’t know the other people nobody felt uncomfortable. Everybody was all smiles and we had quite a few laughs! The drinks were good! 🙂

It is an interesting table to sit at though. Its like a big U shaped booth. Us old people had to scoot all around on our butts to get to our seats. There was no way we were going to go up two steps and somehow get ourselves down into the seat at the bottom of the U. So we stuck to the sides. Andrew and Vivian had no problem though. Peg, Heinz, Adele and myself were all scooters!

We arrived right at 5pm which is opening time and there were a few people waiting, but we got seated right away. By the time we left, the place was packed with a line out the door! Mr. DaRuMa is raking in the dough! Speaking of dough, it was kind of on the expensive side. But what isn’t nowadays? You get what you pay for and this place delivered! Excellent quality. I had the Beef Tenderloin and Shrimp for $38. Fried rice was $5 extra. The dinners come with a cup of clear broth Miso soup and a small salad with ginger dressing. Everything was delicious. They had some Sunset Specials for people that have 5 and 5:30pm reservations that were in the 20s. My wife had one of those, the Scallops. Andrew also ordered an appetizer and some sushi and Vivian ordered sushi for herself and one to share with the rest of us! Thank you Vivian and Andrew! Of course, you have the pickled ginger and wasabi and a bunch of different sauces for dipping. Lets just say the taste buds were tantalized! I got a taste of the white tuna sushi and it was unbelievable! Next time we go back, we go to the sushi bar!

So we got our drinks, the appetizers and the sushi and now the show begins! We talked a little to our Chef manning the table while shrimp tails were flying into his hat and flames heated our faces! He made the fried rice starting out with frying some eggs, adding the rice and spices and dishing it up. My wife watched as the sesame seeds were added and she then said no sesame seeds for her! Too late, but the chef somehow accommodated her! He started cooking a big pile of cut up vegetables for all of us. Then started on our proteins. In between was a lot of flames and sizzling food! A very nice show. I ordered my tenderloin medium rare and it was medium rare. Somebody else ordered their steak well done and it was well done. I don’t think I heard a complaint from anybody at our table of ten!

As you can see by my above plate, presentation is not the focus at the hibachi tables. Its hard for the chef to stretch and pass around food and keep it pretty. But it was tasty! When the food is prepared in the kitchen presentation is on point as you can tell by the sushi plates.

So all in all, the place was fantastic. I can’t wait to go back and sit at the sushi bar. The place has a great vibe. A lot of energy. A mood lifter if you will.
