Hurricane Preparedness
We have a new hurricane season approaching, but are you prepared? When Hurricane Ian blasted through the Fort Meyers area in 2022 I thought we were prepared. We got a pretty good warning in advance, but it was a really slow moving hurricane and those sustained winds and storm surge ended up causing a lot of damage. The further away from the coast you were, the less damage caused by water. But we still experienced power outages, water outages and when the water came back on, water boil orders.
Next time, I’m going to make sure we have lots of water on hand. Fill up the bath tub with water for toilets. I bought a couple of 5 gallon expandable plastic water containers to fill up before the storm hits. I expanded my house battery backup system for longer power outages and bought a power extension cord for my solar panel that recharges the battery. I have extra lights that charge up with solar. I have a radio that you can hand crank and charge the battery if it runs out of power. Although we didn’t have a problem with food I still have lots of canned tuna, chicken and spam on hand. Plus some raymeon on hand too.
I did put up my storm shutters, but will look to getting some neighborhood kids to help next time. Did you know that if you have storm shutters and don’t put them up, your insurance can deny any claims! So put them up!
When the power came back up I made some pizzas and gave some to my neighbors. Be nice to one another!
